Growing in Faith

  • Article by Sharon Tan

A while ago, I was praying for a ministry that I could get involved in, but there seemed to be no answer from God. After praying for two years, I started to doubt myself: Was it due to my inadequacy? Was it because I was not worthy to serve?

All of us are worthy because God has made us worthy through our Lord Jesus, and it is indeed His will that we should serve Him.

With the Holy Spirit’s help, I realised that the doubt was Satan’s way of making me ineffective, and I learned my first lesson from Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” All of us are worthy because God has made us worthy through our Lord Jesus, and it is indeed His will that we should serve Him.

Soon after, during one of the evening worship services at Damansara Heights, Pastor David Seah invited volunteers who wanted to be part of  the Nilai Outreach. I immediately felt led to enquire more about it and texted him to ask for more information about this ministry. However, instead of replying to my queries, he signed me up straight away in the group chat for the Outreach! This was when I learned my second lesson about seeking and praying about serving God: when God opens a door—especially if we have been praying for some time—we need to take a step of faith and act, simply obeying His calling.

From the very first Outreach session held at a factory in Nilai, I was led to join the children’s ministry. After a few sessions of helping with the kids, Janet, our leader, asked if I would like to teach a session. My immediate response was “No,” citing the reasons that I was not confident in teaching children and that I was not fluent in Malay. I told her that maybe I would try the following year, after observing more sessions and learning more Malay biblical terms.

However, during one of the Komsel (Kelompok Sel) meetings when no other teachers were available, I felt convinced to step up. I ended up enjoying the session and have never looked back since! This was the third lesson I learned: many times, we give excuses to God when He asks us to serve, just as Moses did when God asked him to lead the Israelites. Moses said it would be better for his brother Aaron to do so because he could not speak well. Like Moses, we often give excuses instead of obeying when God calls, forgetting that He is the One who provides us with all the resources we need, and that His work has nothing to do with our own capabilities.

As teachers involved in this Outreach, it is our privilege to be entrusted with the children by the parents who attend the meetings. We are partners with them and hope to lay the foundation of God’s Word in the children’s lives. As Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” As we teach and disciple the children, it is our prayer that they will grow to love God, walk with Him, and bring glory and honour to His name all the days of their lives.
